Glass Bottle Construction- Transforming waste into beauty

Whether you enjoy drinking (no judging) or just have a thing for pretty colours, your wine and beer bottles have just found a sustainable use. Every year we throw away 28 Billion glass bottles and jars which could in turn become something beautiful and more useful than a floating bottle with a treasure map.

When dealing with glass bottle construction the only limit is your imagination. There’s no specific route you have to take, just like everything in design, you learn from those before you and put your own twist and ideas into it. To give you the right tools and inspiration we’ve found different examples, from full-on DIY to an architect’s own twist.

The Bottle Houses - Les Maisons de Bouteilles

A magical construction of three buildings that showcase the beauty and fairy tale-like atmosphere a few glass bottles can offer. A pristine project located in the Prince Edward Island the Les Maisons de Bouteilles project has definitely formed something unique while embracing sustainability.

Glass bottle Infill - Sustainable Combo

If you’ve read our “Building with Earth” article then this image won’t seem any odd. A combination of Earthen construction while using glass bottles to bring in light is the sustainability combo we were looking for!

Wireframe Glass Wall- House in the Garden / Cunningham Architects

Taking a more conservative approach this majestic wall by Cunnigham Architects has brought colour and formed a subtle contrast between the shades of the glass and the greenery surrounding it.

By constructing a steel wireframe mould, the recyled glass fills up to the top without any additional support or processing, allowing the two materials to elevate one another.

A simple design concept that allows two fairly simple and cheap materials to enhance the language and concept of this design while creating a focal point for the viewer which acts as the sculptural aspect of the building.
